Creativity for Conservation: Stories That Help Restore the Wild

Every year on December 4th, Wildlife Conservation Day serves as a global reminder that protecting the natural world isn’t optional; it’s urgent. And while conservation is often associated with ecological expertise, legislation, or fieldwork, creativity plays an equally vital role: shaping narratives, inspiring supporters, and turning awareness into tangible action.

At Shine, we’re proud to collaborate with organisations that devote their work and, in many cases, their lives to restoring the landscapes, species and ecosystems we depend upon. Today, we’re celebrating Wildlife Conservation Day by spotlighting the brands and partners who invite us to use creativity as a force for environmental good.

Here are some of the conservation stories we’re proud to help bring to life.

Alladale Wilderness Reserve: Pine Custodians Campaign

Alladale’s Caledonian pinewoods once sheltered wolves, boar, lynx and bears. Centuries of deforestation have left only around 2,000 ancient pines, many of which are unable to regenerate naturally. When Alladale set out to launch the Pine Custodians initiative – a campaign inviting friends and supporters to sponsor one of these remaining ancient trees, with Alladale planting and protecting fifty native saplings in return – they asked us to help bring their vision to life.

We were extremely fortunate to work alongside renowned photographer Adrian Houston to craft a creative identity rooted in reverence, hope, and ecological urgency. From digital storytelling to elegantly printed collateral to a refined, ecommerce-enabled platform, we designed a campaign that empowers conservation supporters to become part of Alladale’s living legacy.

Website Redesign and Development

Alladale’s landscape is undergoing an incredibly ambitious long-term restoration effort – a process that will continue for decades as native forests slowly return. Guided by owner and conservationist Paul Lister, whose vision is to protect and revive some of the last remaining wild places in the UK and Europe, the Reserve has already seen significant progress through extensive planning, habitat restoration, and the planting of over a million trees.

As this work continues, Alladale’s digital presence needs to reflect better both its ecological mission and its role as an extraordinary eco destination. We rebuilt the website from the ground up, weaving together drone footage, beautifully illustrated maps, ranger insights and immersive photography, while creating a clearer, more commercial framework for its accommodation and tourism offering.

The result is a visually rich, intuitive platform that informs, inspires, and invites guests to be part of a landscape in recovery.

The European Nature Trust: Bringing Conservation to the Big Screen

The European Nature Trust (TENT) uses storytelling to safeguard Europe’s wildest places. As their long-term creative partner, we help amplify the narratives that power their restoration work. Their fundraising film premieres – including Why Not Scotland?, Riverwoods, Wild Abruzzo and Unknown Belize – demand identities that communicate urgency, beauty and hope.

We developed comprehensive toolkits for event branding, promotional assets, and campaign visuals, each designed to celebrate nature as the protagonist. Every design system carries its own graphic voice, shaped by the landscapes it represents – from the Scottish Highlands to the remote Italian Apennines. Together, we help TENT inspire audiences to become active stewards of the natural world.

WildCRU: Research That Shapes Global Conservation

The Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCRU) at the University of Oxford is one of the world’s most respected centres for conservation science. Their research informs governments, NGOs, policy-makers and conservation leaders across the globe, guiding decisions that directly affect endangered species, fragile ecosystems and long-term biodiversity resilience.

Their work spans every continent and is organised across key conservation themes, species groups and long-running research programmes. To represent this scale online, we designed and built a digital platform capable of handling a vast, interconnected body of information.

From global research projects and member profiles to an extensive catalogue of publications, the site required meticulous structural planning paired with intelligent backend development. Every dataset – from research themes to species to individual researchers – needed to interlink seamlessly, presenting the correct information to users based on their chosen paths of exploration.

The result is a platform that not only showcases WildCRU’s groundbreaking work, but actively supports researchers, students and partners worldwide by making complex scientific data accessible, navigable and meaningful.

Natural Born Runners: Merging Running, Conservation & Conversation

Natural Born Runners, founded by Paul Gardiner, brings conservation storytelling to a younger audience by merging adventure running with deep-dive explorations of threatened ecosystems. The challenge: crafting a brand that feels fun, youthful and energetic while still honouring the seriousness of environmental decline.

We produced a dynamic visual identity, including a bold logo system, animated route maps, vibrant graphic overlays and a fresh tone of voice. The result is an online presence that feels accessible, exciting and deeply connected to the landscapes it celebrates.

As Paul shared: “Their creativity, innovation and bold ideas truly help to elevate our brands into the stratosphere.”

The EcoVenturist: Turning Stories Into Impact

Our latest conservation-led collaboration is The EcoVenturist – a bold storytelling platform that spotlights the people, places and species shaping the future of conservation. Born from a global vision to merge adventure, education and environmental advocacy, The EcoVenturist champions four pillars: Conservation, Community, Eco-Tourism and Wildbeing.

We worked closely with Paul to explore naming directions and define a creative territory that captured the heart of the brand: impactful filmmaking, partnerships with eco-tourism leaders around the world, and stories that spark real change. This foundation guided the development of a vibrant visual identity that brings their mission to life across every touchpoint.

From there, we designed and built a digital home that elevates their films, articles and expeditions while giving audiences – including corporate partners working toward their sustainability goals – a clear path to engage. Rather than centring on donations, the platform focuses on mobilisation: inspiring people to watch, learn, care, and ultimately take meaningful action for the natural world.

Why We Do This Work

Conservation is, at its heart, a creative act. It imagines a future richer than the present. One where ecosystems recover, species return, and communities thrive. That vision is powerful, but bringing it to life requires clarity, purpose and communication that resonates.

As a creative agency, that’s where we step in.

We help conservation organisations turn their missions into clear, compelling stories. Through branding, design, film, illustration, digital platforms and campaigns, we give shape to the ideas driving environmental change.

Creativity helps people see what’s possible. It helps them understand why it matters and feel connected to the work happening on the ground. It turns complex challenges into stories people can grasp and stories into actions they want to take. It builds trust, elevates voices and helps organisations reach supporters they may not otherwise get.

Our role is to help organisations unlock the future they’re striving for by giving their ideas form, voice and visibility, and by ensuring their messages reach the audiences who can help make that future real.

On Wildlife Conservation Day, we’re honoured to stand beside the teams restoring our planet’s wild places and grateful for the chance to use creativity in the service of something that truly matters.

If your organisation is working to protect the natural world and needs a creative partner to help tell your story, we’d love to hear from you.
